Jesse Hughes is a rock n' roll star. That is a bona fide fact. And as the moustache sporting enigma straddled the balcony of the O2 academy in Newcastle, it became clear that the world is in serious need of more full on rock n' roll stars these days.
The Eagles of Death Metal know this. They've been taking a good hard look at the musical landscape recently, and they're not impressed. That's why they've made it their mission to pummel the world with good vibes and sexy rock n roll one venue at time. And as the band entered to the Pilot classic Magic, you could immediately tell that they were indeed the remedy to the rock mediocrity blues.
Burning through a career spanning set, stopping only to declare their love to an adoring crowd; the reverend (yeah he's an ordained minister since 2012...would you expect anything less?) and co turned it up to 11 kicking out anthems Cherry Cola, Don't Speak and Wannabe in LA to a frenzied reaction.
Fresh cuts from their latest album Zipper Down slipped nicely into the set list with the poptacular Complexity and the hipster bashing Silverlake particular highlights. Even without co founder Josh Homme, the band are on top form. Not at all weakened by the absence of one of rocks biggest stars.
The show ends in a blaze of showmanship and guitar duelling, with an extended version of Speaking in Tongues leading to the frontman scaling the venue to give himself a birds eye view of his audience. There's just enough time for more declarations of love and then it's all over.
All in all it's an eye opening experience. We're used to brand managed personalities on our stages nowadays, lacking in imagination and emotion. Eagles of Death Metal are the polar opposite, a brash, outrageous act that parents love to hate and will have audiences coming back time and time again.
We're still lacking in rock stars, but as long as Jesse Hughes and EODM are fighting the good fight, there is hope for a brighter future.
Peace, love and death metal. \m/
